Venice

Venice is unique. A city in northeastern Italy and the capital of the Veneto region, it is situated across a group of 117 small islands that are separated by canals and linked by bridges. These islands are in the shallow Venetian Lagoon which along with a part of the city are listed as a World Heritage Site. They say that you simply must see Venice once before you die - and indeed you must. Don't go in the summer when it is crawling with tourists - go in November and preferably not with a group of tourists. You'll need to wrap up - it can be bitingly cold but you'll find a Venice of Venecians. After you've been on the No 1 to see the Grand Canal, start to walk around. Explore the small squares and churches. Absorb the wonderfull colours of the buildings. Eat with the Venecians and you'll eat well and inexpensively. Eat withe the Americans and you'll eat well and pay through the nose. Seek out a small inexpensive hotel as near to St Marks as you can as a base. Don't forget the islands - Torcello will haunt you forever. When you have experienced the beauty of Venice, nothing will ever seem the same again. We could write about Venice but we will never capture the feeling of being there.

Venice - never forgotten
